The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) is inviting South Dakota artists to submit proposals for two large-scale outdoor murals as part of Rapid City’s Downtown Beautification Project. This public art initiative seeks to transform Rapid City through murals that reflect the region’s natural beauty and community spirit.
Selected murals will be installed in two locations downtown and are anticipated to be completed by Early July 2026, weather permitting.
Overview:
The murals will be installed on an exterior wall located in downtown Rapid City. The theme for these murals will be nature-themed, specifically focusing on the natural surroundings of the Black Hills. The artist will be responsible for all wall preparation, paint, and materials.

Artist Eligibility:
- Open to all artists or artist groups within South Dakota
- Must be able to provide materials
- Must have knowledge of mural installations
- Experienced with public art or large-scale murals preferred.
Proposal Requirements:
- Artist statement and biography
- Artist CV
- Photographs of previous public art installations or previous murals
- Concept description and visual mock-up/sketch
- Explanation of how the design aligns with the theme of nature and community values
- Budget breakdown (including artist fees, material, equipment, anti graffiti coating etc.)
- Timeline for completion
Budget & Compensation:
The City of Rapid City approved $34,500 for Downtown Beautification for the completion of 2 large-scale murals. The artist will receive payments for these murals in two installments. The first installment of 30% will be awarded to the artist upon selection and signing of a contract. This will help cover the initial material costs. Final payment will be issued to the artist upon project completion. The artists will be notified of selection no later than March 27, 2026, and first payments will be available on April 3, 2026.
