Large-Scale Mural Projects

Mural On The Wall and Dani Dodge Selected to Paint Murals in Downtown Rapid City

The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) and the City of Rapid City have selected Mural On The Wall and Dani Dodge to paint two large-scale outdoor murals as part of Rapid City’s Downtown Beautification Project. This public art initiative seeks to transform Rapid City through murals that reflect the region’s natural beauty and community spirit. The murals are anticipated to be completed by the end of July 2026.

Mural On The Wall (OTW) is a community-driven mural collective based in Vermillion, SD. Established in 2019 by founding members Reyna Hernandez, Amber Hansen, and Sonia Hernandez. The collective facilitates public art projects that prioritize local voices and regional history.

Mural on the Wall said, “We are deeply honored that our work was chosen as a part of the 2026 Rapid City Downtown Beautification Project. Thank you to the Rapid City Arts Council and the Dahl Arts Center for the opportunity to paint in Art Alley and create a mural that honors the beauty and power of the He Sapa. We are grateful for the support, funding, and implementation of public art initiatives and hope to see more opportunities like this, that highlight the vital role that public art & artists play in shaping culture.”

Dani Dodge is a Rapid City-based multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses visual arts, creative writing and large-scale installation. Her versatile portfolio includes extensive work in watercolor, acrylic and digital illustration. She has previously completed large-scale indoor murals in Las Calles De Chihuahua in Rapid City and Westlake Dance Center in Seattle, WA.

Dodge says about being selected “Being selected by the RCAC for this project is a huge honor. While I’ve spent years painting interior displays, moving my work outdoors onto a public stage means the world to me. This piece is a tribute to the local beauty that made me fall in love with the Black Hills, and I love that it functions as a gift to the community. Art that is accessible to everyone at no cost is an important value of mine. I am grateful for the opportunity to leave a unique 'beauty mark' in the heart of our city."

The murals will be installed on an exterior wall located in downtown Rapid City. The theme for these murals will be nature-themed, specifically focusing on the natural surroundings of the Black Hills. The artist will be responsible for all wall preparation, paint, and materials.

Exterior wall located in the alley between 720 Apolda Street and the 700 Block of West Main Street Parking in Downtown Rapid City.
