Art Walks: Celebration of Local Art Continues August 2 in Downtown Rapid City RAPID CITY, SD – Notable local artists representing diverse artforms and even some rally themed art will appear at 17 destinations for First Friday Art Walks, presented by the Rapid City Arts Council, in downtown Rapid City on Friday, August 2 starting at 5pm. Art Walk participants explore at their own pace, with opportunities to meet local artists, enjoy live music and get creative. First Fridays are a family-friendly event held monthly to celebrate Rapid City’s many talented artists and to boost the local economy through the arts. This month’s Art Walk activities include: Art Alley: Community Mural Painting Art House: Dani Summ Art & Conor McGraw Art BB's Natural Wine Bar: Suzie Cappa Walkway Open Canvas 2 Paint: Planted Beauty Co. Pop-Up Dahl Arts Center: Sophia Clarke Pop-Up Dandelion Bouquet: Sip & Shop with Make & Take Home Projects Firehouse Wine Cellars: Live Music from Steven Nichols Garbage Tale Vintage: Welby June Main Street Square: Library Advocate 5-6pm; Emerging Performing Artists Open Mic 6-8pm Melissa Wood Art Gallery: Live Watercolor Painting in Studio Prairie Edge Trading Co & Galleries: Motorcycle and Native American Themed Art of Jim Yellowhawk 5-7pm Pure Fox: Children Home Society Origami cranes & swans for art exhibit Suzie Cappa Art Center: Art Sales & Community Art Activities Other Participating Businesses: Alex Johnson Mercantile, Rapid City Visitor Center, Revival Studios, and Ugly Graffiti Maps with all the Art Walk stops will be available at the Dahl Arts Center, and online, and at all participating locations. First Friday at the Dahl to Feature Pop-Up Exhibition by Sophia Clarke A pop-up exhibition featuring the works of Sophia Clarke will open First Friday at the Dahl starting at 5pm, with a meet-and-greet with the artist. Clarke brings a rich Caribbean perspective to her work, influenced by her personal experiences of spending her formative years in the Bahamas. Her art explores the boundaries of self-exploration, post-colonial dynamics, and social structures shaped by colonialism. Clarke’s work is characterized by the intricate layering of language, culture, and art, often featuring feminine figures complemented by specific flora and fauna. "Through art, I discover the world through a post-colonial lens, considering the power dynamics and social structures that have been influenced by colonialism and its aftermath," said Sophia Clarke. "My goal is to look at the structures in our society today and examine their foundations, often using craft and nontraditional materials to record and share stories that have been marginalized or overlooked." The monthly pop-up exhibitions at the Dahl Arts Center offer a dynamic platform for local artists to showcase their work and engage with the community. First Friday in Main Street Square: Emerging Performing Artists Open Mic A concert and open mic session will be held at Main Street Square this First Friday starting at 5pm as part of RCAC’s Emerging Performing Artist program. Free and open to the public, local musician Library Advocate will be on the main stage from 5-6pm, followed by an open mic from 6-8pm.
