Create in the OPEN Art Studio

We are building a strong and welcoming creative community: a space where artists can regularly gather, develop their skills, exchange ideas, and build meaningful connections with one another. In addition to supporting individual artistic growth, we hope this studio becomes a space that encourages collaboration, networking, and a shared investment in the arts. All artistic mediums and art forms welcome!

The Kansas City Street Entrance is open Monday-Friday from 10am-4pm & Sundays from 1-3pm.

Volunteer-Led Drawing Group
Sundays | 1-3pm

Picture
Our Volunteer-Led Drawing Group is a lightly guided, open-studio drawing session focused on working from a live clothed model. The group is open to participants ages 16 and up and welcomes a wide range of experience levels, from those just beginning to those with more developed drawing practices.

This group provides a safe, supportive place for community artists to learn, observe, and develop drawing skills alongside others. Participants are encouraged to learn not only from the instructor, but also from the shared experience of working alongside fellow community artists.

Sessions are organized and facilitated by the volunteer instructor and take place in our studio on Sundays from 1-3pm. The format is flexible: participants who prefer to work more independently are welcome to do so, while those seeking feedback or general guidance may receive support throughout the session. These sessions are not intended to function as one-on-one lessons, but rather as a collaborative studio environment with light instruction and shared learning.
The RCAC provides basic drawing materials, including charcoal, pencils, erasers, newsprint, and a limited amount of drawing paper. Participants are encouraged to bring preferred personal supplies, especially sketchbooks, drawing pads, or tablets suitable for drawing practice.

Easels and seating are available on a first come, first served basis. When the model podium is in use, studio capacity is typically limited to 15 participants.

Picture
The Rapid City Arts Council staff and Board of Directors thanks the City of Rapid City for continuously supporting our mission and the arts. The generosity of our many volunteers, donors, and members drives our mission to champion inclusive, innovative and inspiring arts opportunities to enrich the communities we serve.  Additional support comes from the South Dakota Community Foundation, Black Hills Area Community Foundation, and the South Dakota Arts Council with funds from the State of South Dakota through the Department of Tourism and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Dahl Arts Center is a municipal facility of the City of Rapid City and is managed by the Rapid City Arts Council on behalf of the Rapid City community.
