WICOWOYAKE ITOWAPI UN OYAKAPI Photographic Storytelling from the Boys & Girls Club of Rosebud Event: Emerging Visual Artists Exhibition Featured Artists: Boys & and Girls Club of Rosebud Exhibition Dates: 05.03.24 - 05.31.24 Reception Date: May 3, 5-7 PM Location: Bruce H. Lien Cultural Café & Gallery, Dahl Arts Center RAPID CITY, SD - The Rapid City Arts Council announces the next Emerging Visual Artist exhibition, WICOWOYAKE ITOWAPI UN OYAKAPI Photographic Storytelling from the Boys and Girls Club of Rosebud and Five Corners Collective. An opening reception will be held on May 3 in the Bruce H. Lien Cultural Café & Gallery at the Dahl Arts Center. The artwork presented includes a 31-foot-long and 10-foot-wide visual representation of a Lakota kinship circle welcoming technology into its midst. Since 2016, Lakota youth from the Boys & Girls Club of Rosebud have collaborated with teaching artists from Five Corners Collective to craft their tales, offering a poignant glimpse into their lives and cultural heritage. Through the lens of photography, these young artists redefine the concept of portraiture, inviting viewers to explore their identities and values in a multifaceted manner. The works convey themes of the celestial realm while within the ancient wisdom of Lakota Star Knowledge, where the interconnectedness of earthly and cosmic phenomena shapes traditional beliefs and guides meaningful lives. The exhibition reimagines the role of storytelling, where narratives serve as catalysts for profound societal reflection and transformation. Five Corners Collective is a non-profit teaching and exhibition collective. It was founded by graduates of the Hartford Art School’s MFA program in photography who wanted to share their love of photography and visual storytelling. The Collective partners with community groups to teach community members the photographic skills they need to tell their own stories. It then works with those groups to develop opportunities for their members to share their stories locally and beyond. The Boys & Girls Club of Rosebud provides mentoring, sports, scouting, academic tutoring, and arts education to children and teens residing on the Rosebud Reservation. It helps them develop the skills, resilience, and self-confidence to become healthy young adults. Each year, the club serves approximately 300 youth between the ages of five and eighteen. The Emerging Visual Artists (EVA) Program was established in 2013 by the Rapid City Arts Council to support visual artists looking to gain experience working with art galleries and exhibiting their works for the first time. RCAC's education staff works with the artist through the process, from selecting works, getting critiques, pricing, writing a statement, and creating and promoting the exhibit. Applications for EVA proposals are received all year round for individual artists and groups. RCAC is currently accepting applications for the 2025 exhibition calendar. The Emerging Visual Artists program is a rotating exhibition presented by the Rapid City Arts Council and is proudly supported by local donors. Annual Art Alley Clean-up Day Calls for BYOPW (Bring Your Own Powerwasher) WHAT: Art Alley Clean Up Day WHEN: May 11 from 10am-2pm WHERE: Art Alley, Downtown Rapid City The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) is excited to announce the second annual Art Alley Clean-Up Day on May 11, 2024. This initiative aims to refresh the city’s iconic Art Alley in anticipation of visitors and fresh murals for the summer season. Art Alley Clean-Up Day will kick off at 10:00 am behind Art House on Main Street (and between Sixth and Seventh Streets), where RCAC will distribute cleaning supplies and connect volunteers eager to make a difference in downtown this spring. From then until 2:00 pm, volunteers will pick up trash, power wash, cover unpermitted tags, and revitalize the space so artists and the community can enjoy the alley this summer. This renowned downtown alleyway became a space for artistic expression more than 20 years ago as graffiti artists focused on the prime downtown brick walls. The “Art Alley” designation came about when artists and community members came together with city officials to recognize the importance of this public art locale. In 2016, the city called for a permit system to be managed by the Rapid City Arts Council. In 2023, Black Hills Energy completed a transformational construction project that buried infrastructure and expanded access to exposed brick walls and an open sky view. Today the walls change constantly, sometimes many times a day– making Art Alley a vibrant public art space and popular destination for artists, locals, and visitors. Art Alley is a public space visited by thousands of people every year The Clean-Up Day effort ensures Rapid City looks its best. RCAC invites the public to be a part of the effort, whether you're a local business, a community organization, or an individual passionate about Art Alley, your support is invaluable in making Art Alley Clean-Up Day count. BYOPW - Bring your own power washer, if you can. RCAC will provide additional supplies and equipment. This year’s annual event is made possible through generous support from Visit Rapid City. Join RCAC and the community on May 11th for a day of cleaning, collaboration, and community engagement to take back Art Alley. To let us know you and your friends are coming to help please email artalleyeducation@thedahl.org. Artists interested in painting murals in Art Alley can obtain permits at www.artalleyrc.com. ## For More Information: Maggie Jean Wince Rapid City Arts Council 605.394.4101 x5 marketing@thedahl.org The purpose of the Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) is to champion the power of art to bring all kinds of people together, making art more accessible, more integral and more inspiring for the communities we serve.
